PS3 sales up 85%
While Sony's share price has sunk to a 16-year low, at least its gaming division is showing growth, with PlayStation sales still performing strongly.
During the second quarter of 2008 (July to September), PS3 sales hit 2.43 million, up 85% from the same period last year, when only 1.31 million units were sold.
PSP (PlayStation Portable) sales are also well up from the same period last year, rising 23% from 2.58 million to 3.18 million.
While PlayStation 2 sales are down by 25% to 2.5 million, the figure still tops the sales of the PS3. In fact, the PS2 tops the PS3 for both hardware and software sales, more than eight years after it was introduced.
In the software department, Sony sold over 21 million PS3 games during the second quarter, as well as 11.8 million PSP titles and 23.1 million PS2 games.
Still, things are looking far less rosy for Sony's wider business during the three months in question. The company's overall profit fell by 72% to $214 million and its share price fell to a 16-year low ahead of the release of these financial results.
