YouTube to start selling games
YouTube is planning to enter the realm of eCommerce, and has earmarked video games as one of the first products it will be advertising.
Links taking YouTube viewers to products relevant to the video on display will be placed below certain clips, taking users either through to Amazon or iTunes, depending on the type of product. YouTube will be making its money by taking a share of the profit if a product is bought via the link.
Games, along with music, will be the first products to be featured, though this will later expand to include films, TV shows, books and concert tickets. The list of retail partners will aso expand as the scheme progresses. EA's Spore will be the first game to get this treatment.
Initially, only American users will be be exposed to the new scheme, but other regions will be including at a later stage.
The move will allmost certainly make YouTube a force to be reckoned with in the retail sector, considering that in August 2008 alone the site was visited by more than 330 million visitors.
"YouTube content partners now have the ability to promote and monetize their content in a new and exciting way and create a deeper distribution channel for their content online", said Chad Hurley, co-founder and CEO of YouTube.
